NISC (by Sapphire) is in it’s tenth year and continues to offer an innovative approach to Information Assurance and Information Security. This unique event gives delegates the opportunity to increase both their practical and theoretical knowledge in a relaxed and informal environment, taking information security to another level. The conference provides an abundance of opportunities for delegates, presenters and sponsors to benefit from peer-to-peer networking and collaboration. Simon has had the pleasure of presenting keynote sessions at NISC for the last six years, and is again looking forward to attending and participating in what has proven to be an excellent conference, now in its tenth year.
Session title:
“Business risks in climate change”
Abstract:
“There is now broad scientific and political consensus that anthropogenic climate change is occurring and that avoiding catastrophic effects will require reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of at least 80% (over current) by 2050. Achieving those cuts will involve far reaching changes to the ways in which we conduct our daily activities, plan our communities, operate businesses, and govern the economies of the world. Already, forward thinking businesses and public sector organisations are examining their own operating models and energy dependencies and are introducing the first raft of changes, designed to help them both understand their current emissions levels and to drive them down over the coming years. As every information security professional is aware; “Change alters the balance of risk”. This session examines the current state of play, the most likely changes we are set to see (in the 2009 to 2020 range), and points toward those areas to which information and infrastructure security professionals and risk managers need pay attention.”

How to protect your IT assets and stay ahead of the curve
Date: Feb 17th @ 3pm GMT
Duration: 60 minutes
Description:
Data theft and loss reports can do serious damage to an organisation’s reputation and share price, but firms continue to hit the headlines with lurid reports of lost laptops, hacker incursions and all manner of embarrassing IT problems. Staying out of the headlines is therefore a must-do for any IT manager. But how can this be achieved?
Data protection and secure asset tracking are proven solutions to this growing problem facing many firms. And it’s not just about laptops. Most modern smartphones and PDAs also contain confidential data. This event will explain how you can protect your IT and data assets more effectively, and also how assets can be retrieved or data remotely deleted in the event of a loss or theft.

Enhancing your business agility through virtualisation
Powerpoint files and video of the webinar are available here (please note that replay is unfortunately only available via IE)
About this event:
As businesses face a volatile economic outlook there is increased emphasis on delivering efficient and effective IT. Virtualisation technology – at the server, client, network and storage level – has been touted as key to achieving a cost-effective, agile infrastructure. However, despite the benefits on offer, virtualisation adds another layer of complexity to IT operations, presents management challenges, and involves potential knock-on effects for other parts of the IT infrastructure. Successful deployments need careful planning, as well as the participation of users, many of whom will be oblivious to the changes being made in the way IT services are delivered to them. In this Computing web seminar, in association with F5 Networks, we examine the tools, technologies and best practices that allow firms to successfully deploy virtualisation technology, thereby reaping some of the anticipated cost-savings and improving their ability to rapidly respond to changes in the business environment. Our panel of experts will discuss the ways in which firms can benefit from a carefully-scoped project implementation, and a real-life case study will demonstrate the experiences of one such organisation.

How to create a culture of risk management in your organisation
Powerpoint files and video of the webinar are available here (please note that replay is unfortunately only available via IE)
About this event:
IT managers have become adept at introducing technology to help manage risk, but without the right processes, attitudes and education, that investment is meaningless. Staff at all levels of the organisation need to understand the importance of best practice, to be aware of the threats and risks they face, and to treat sensitive corporate information as if it were their own. To achieve this means ingraining a culture of risk management that combines technology, processes and people. In this Computing web seminar, in association with BT, we look at the cultural and organisational aspects of effectively managing risk.

From Web Browsing to Social Networking: Securing Employee Internet Use in a Web 2.0 World
Date: Thursday 22nd January, 2009 3PM EST
Duration: 60 minutes
Description:
The Internet has changed. It is no longer about e-mail and web browsing. Instead Internet traffic is dominated by Web 2.0 applications such as Video, Voice, IM (Instant Messaging), P2P, and social networking. These consumer-oriented applications are introduced by employees in the workplace to gain efficiencies, but they circumvent existing security infrastructure and are the new channel for malware, information leakage and compliance violations. Combine this with enterprise roll outs of UC platforms and the challenge remains: how do you mitigate business risks while allowing employees to collaborate using these applications?
CISSPs and SSCPs received 1 CPE credit for attending this webinar.
